Tech that changed my life for me was honestly glasses, I dont wear them much but in Middle school I couldn’t see much on the board and it took forever for my eyes to focus on the front read everything on the board then look down to my paper and they had to refocus. My teachers thought I was really stupid. It changed everything. My teeth were something of hyper focus for me for years, I had an accident when I was young and half my teeth were messed up, “snaggle toothed” as some lovingly called them. It stuck with me thinking that everyone focused on that especially when your few friends have really good teeth, perfectly aligned (at least seeming).

During 2020 as an adult I was able to pay for getting them straightened (byte- honestly it was great). When everyone was wearing masks not really seeing faces it was kind of an ideal time to go through that struggle and it hurt but when I emerged all excited for when people would see my new aligned smile. No one really noticed, they just didn’t notice my old snaggle teeth. And some that knew me and were close said they never even noticed my teeth in the past. That hyperfixation was only brought about by the bullies of life and really didn’t mean as much to the world as I had thought it would.

Thanks for your vulnerability

No, thank YOU for sharing. I always wanted glasses because I thought it made people cool- when I took an eye exam, I failed on purpose but the insurance we had when we were young that all the frames looked horrible. Thankful for my 20/20.

Marc, this is a beautiful piece. It is beautifully written. When I read your posts, I am always struck that your voice is perfect for writing to a child, both in terms of your own process and when Myles will read these one day. Thank you. As for your questions: 1. Oh yes. I had a great barber. One day I arrived on time and it was evident that his schedule was running over and he was tight on time. He gave me the second worst haircut of my life that day. I never returned. 2. Where I went to law school. If I were to make a list of 25 things about myself, it wouldn't come close to making it. I find that others care much more. 3. In high school, I worked and also cut lawns. I saved everything, but I knew during the summer before my senior year that I was going to need a typewriter for college applications. I made my second big purchase in life -- the first was a Sony boom box with high speed dubbing (it still works great). That typewriters, which also still works, worked like a champ, including 10 years later when I applied to law school. I won't ever get rid of either of those. 6. Maybe you could write to Myles about the things he will learn about himself that will lead to self-love, which can be difficult to hold onto.

You might enjoy this post of my first haircut (just photos). https://heftymatters.substack.com/p/my-terrifying-first-haircut-photos

Have a great weekend, Marc.

I’m a t liner first, then disposable razor after kinda guy. Mine left me around age 16 for the first time and again at age 20. Didn’t feel like it but best decision for my pockets and my confidence.

If Myles looks anything like his mom or dad he has nothing to fear as far as confidence goes. You’re rocking this dad stuff.
