If you’re new to Raising Myles, Welcome!

I write letters to my newborn son, Myles, sharing my journey as a first-time dad and spreading the love I didn't experience myself. If you’ve been here before — thank you for coming back. If you’re new here, below are some good places to start:

  • Most Recent: A Trip to New York

  • I Never Knew Grief Could Be a Place

  • How I Met Your Mother

  • We Don’t Eat Cats and Dogs

  • Am I Good Dad, or Is the Bar Just Really Low?

A gentle heads up: The letter below is a deeper one about fatherhood. Most of it is behind a paywall. Any funds collected from these letters goes towards a college plan for Myles.

If you would like to contribute to Myles’ college fund and join me in this journey of going deeper, please consider upgrading your subscription.

20 Months,

Dear Myles,

It’s not like I have the time. Between working, chasing after you, and trying to be a good partner, it is not like there is any extra time, or energy to spare. But after watching you for months, days, weeks, and hours—trying to learn to throw a ball in the air and catch it—I am inspired.

I started something hard, something I have been putting off for a long time, because, truthfully, I did not think I was smart enough. I did not think I had what it takes—truthfully, sometimes I still don’t. But there is something about seeing you try and try at something difficult that makes me think maybe I should try too. Maybe I have what it takes—not just to throw and catch a ball, but maybe—just maybe—I could even throw it up in the air, off the glass, and windmill it in, Vinsanity style.

There is something about having a child that puts a battery in your back—something that makes you feel like you can do anything.
