Every other week, I have been alternating between writing long-form letters and small notes and pieces for Myles. You can now find all the short ones here.
This letter was inspired by last week’s letter - Last week You Met Your Grandfather. The look my father gave Myles reminded me of the precious moments I get to experience when Myles looks so intently at me.
This is for the time you looked at me, and for a second, I forgot the world was burning.
27 Weeks Old
Dear Myles,
What do you see when you look at me?
Because you look at me like you've known me my whole life,
Like you knew, when you first opened your eyes to the world,
And let heaven know with your mouth
the blessing has found its place.
You look at me like I’m someone worth knowing,
Like I have gems for molars and diamonds for a tongue.
Like I'll never disappoint you a day in your life.
That when I step inside your purview,
You look at me like my name is hope, joy, and possibility all wrapped in one.
Like how your mother first looked at me when we first fell in love,
Like she saw something beautiful stuck on my face that no one ever saw before,
Not even myself.
You look at me like I’m the only thing that matters in the world,
Like you can see my past, future, and present,
You see the person I was created to be.
This must be a glimpse of God’s face when he forgives through grace,
Even when I’m most undeserving.
Or his facade just after he pushed the clouds aside to tell the world,
"This is my son with whom I’m well pleased."
This must be the same look he had on his face
When after all creation was done,
He stepped back and said, "Very good."
Thank you for seeing me
The way God sees me.
Love,
Daddy

Let’s LOOK at our thoughts:
When was the last time someone looked at you or made you feel like you were the only thing that mattered in the world?
When was the last time you gave someone that special look?
At what age do you think staring becomes weird or impolite?
What are you looking forward to today, tomorrow, or in the near future?
Take a moment to look in the mirror and tell yourself something nice—you deserve it. I dare you to share what you said because it’s true.

5) “Your dreams will come true.”
What a beautiful piece to read first thing in the morning. I am enchanted by your love of your child and, as you point out, it is a metaphor too large for most of us to see.
